KERRY EARNHARDT TEAMS WITH BASS PRO SHOPS® AND TRACKER® BOATS TO RUN 5 CUP RACES FOR RCR
JAN 21, 2004--Kerry Earnhardt will compete in five NASCAR Cup Series races in 2004 for Richard Childress Racing (RCR) in the No. 33 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Earnhardt, 34, is the eldest son of Dale Earnhardt who, with RCR, earned 67 race wins and six of his seven NASCAR Cup Series championships. He is scheduled to compete April 25 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, May 22 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord for the NASCAR All-Star Challenge, July 3 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and Oct. 3 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
"The chance to put Kerry in an RCR car with sponsorship from Bass Pro Shops is going to be a great opportunity for everyone involved," said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. "I've known Kerry for years and Johnny Morris (founder of Bass Pro Shops and TRACKER Boats) has been a personal friend of mine and a sponsor of RCR for quite a while now. We look forward to giving Kerry the chance to be competitive and seeing what the future brings."
Earnhardt has one NASCAR Cup start, driving the No. 71 Marcis Auto Racing Chevrolet at Michigan International Speedway on Aug. 20, 2000. He also has 65 NASCAR Busch Series starts since 2000, earning two top-five and five top-10 finishes. In 11 starts over two seasons (2000-01) in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, he had four wins, seven top-five and eight top-10 finishes.
"Richard and I have talked for a long time but we never really had the chance to put anything together until this opportunity with Johnny Morris and Bass Pro Shops came up," said Earnhardt. "Driving for my dad was obviously always my first choice but driving for Richard was always my second choice. I know that Richard is looking at me as a talent and not just my name. It's just five races but I'm looking at it as an opportunity to be associated with a competitive team again and RCR is all about winning. I've only had that one time before, with DEI (Dale Earnhardt, Inc.) in the ARCA Series, and putting forth the effort to win is what it's all about."
RCR and Bass Pro Shops have maintained a relationship since 1998, when the nation's leading retailer of premium outdoor gear signed on as an associate sponsor of the No. 3 GM Goodwrench Chevrolet. That same year, Dale Earnhardt drove a Bass Pro Shops' paint-schemed car in The Winston at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
"All of us at Bass Pro Shops are extremely proud to be associated with Kerry Earnhardt and Richard Childress, both great outdoorsmen, who love to hunt and fish," stated Bass Pro Shops and TRACKER Boats founder Johnny Morris. "This car will be our salute to outdoorsmen across America."
Bass Pro Shops, also a major Internet and catalog retailer, currently operates 21 retail store locations across the United States. Award-winning in their concept and design, Bass Pro Shops retail stores are rated high as tourist destination picks with almost 60 million people visiting the stores annually.
